Mr Roger Ackroyd  FRCS MBChB MD   – Consultant Bariatric Surgeon

Roger AckroydRoger Ackroyd qualified in medicine from Sheffield University in 1989. He trained in general and upper GI surgery in Sheffield and in Adelaide, South Australia.

He took up a consultant appointment in Sheffield in 2001 and is a reputed consultant Bariatric surgeon working in the NHS and the private sector in the UK.

He was President of the British Obesity Surgery & Metabolic Surgery (BOMSS) 2015-2017. He is currently secretary of BOMSS

His main clinical interests include oesophago-gastric cancer surgery, laparoscopic surgery and bariatric surgery. He also runs an active research programme. His main research interests include ablation therapy for Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal cancer, clinical trials comparing different types of anti-reflux surgery and evaluating the metabolic effects of obesity surgery.

The weight loss surgery procedures offered by him include: Gastric Balloon, Laparoscopic Gastric Band, Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y), Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve) and Revisional Surgery (Conversion Surgery).

He has performed to date approximately 4,500 Bariatric cases


Dr Nick Barron FRCA FICCM MBBS BSc – Consultant Anaesthetist

Dr Barron graduated in medicine from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in 1994.

He trained in anaesthesia and critical care medicine in Sheffield and Bristol and has been working as a consultant in anaesthesia/critical care medicine at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals since 2004.

He is currently Clinical Director of Critical Care and Anaesthesia.

He is one of the most experienced bariatric anaesthetists in the UK

He lectures at national and international conferences and teaching events on the subject and can rightly claim to be one of the UK experts in Bariatric Anaesthesia

 Mrs Louise Hague – Consultant Nurse

Louise King Louise qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1990-specialising in Mental Health.

She is registered with the NMC and is a member of the Royal College of Nursing. Since 1990 she has worked in several areas of psychiatry and general medicine.

Louise holds the Master Practitioner qualification in Eating Disorders and Obesity with diplomas in psychological interventions for eating disorders and obesity, nutritional interventions for eating disorders and essential Obesity. Louise is also a qualified EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) practitioner.

She has been working with Gateway Health as a consultant Nurse since 2007.

Louise works closely with our patients, before and after surgery supporting them through  lifestyle change, motivating, breaking down barriers to change and supporting psychological changes.

Mrs Nerissa Walker- Specialist Bariatric Dietitian

Nerissa  is a registered Dietitian with extensive clinical knowledge and experience of  dietary and nutritional management of  bariatric patients.

Nerissa has practised as a specialist dietitian in bariatric surgery since 2001 alongside Mr Roger Ackroyd in Sheffield, which is one of the most experienced and active bariatric surgery units in the UK.

Nerissa is an affiliate member of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) and a member of the BOMSS dietitians committee. She is also a member of British Dietetic Association (BDA) and Dietitians in Obesity Management (DOM UK).

Nerissa has developed bariatric diet sheets together with bariatric patient literature with the BOMSS dietitians committee members which are used widely across the UK. She also acts as an expert dietitian in bariatric legal cases.

Nerissa is also a member of the National Obesity Forum (NOF) and International Federation for Obesity Surgery (IFSO).

Nerissa lectures both locally and nationally upon dietetic and nutrition related aspects of bariatric surgery primarily to dietitians and other health  care professionals and actively trains and clinically supervises other dietitians.

Nerissa is a dedicated and supportive dietitian, she ensures patients receive individualised high quality, evidence based dietary treatment.

Mr Andrew Baldwin – Bariatric Specialist Nurse

Andy qualified in General nursing in 1988. He gained an advanced diploma in critical care in 1999.

He practises as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and an Advanced Theatre Practitioner alongside Mr Roger Ackroyd, leading UK Bariatric Surgeon. Andy is committed to providing compassionate, caring, individualised care to our patients.

Andy has been running Bariatric Aftercare clinics since 2003 and has worked with Gateway Health since 2008. Andy has extensive experience and knowledge, guiding patients to work effectively to change diet and behaviours.

He is a Registered Gastric Band trainer, providing practical training to health professionals learning to adjust Gastric Bands. he also presents at national Gastric band training programmes.

Andy is an allied healthcare associate member of BOMSS (British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society.)

Dr Andrew Kemp PhD – Consultant Nurse

Andrew kemo

Andrew qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1984. Pre bariatrics he spent most of his career in Acute and emergency surgical work. In 2006 he attended the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons where he completed the Advanced Bariatric course – the only nurse working in Europe to have done so. He also attended the Inamed master class and workshops in gastric banding.

He is a member of the teaching faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, where he supports courses for Consultant surgeons three times a year. He is also a member of the RCS group which looks at the way in which surgeons are trained now and in the future.

He holds additional specialist qualifications in;

Operating department practice, Bariatric surgery, Infection Control, Health and Safety

Mr Sultan Hassan – Consultant Plastic Surgeon

Sultan Hassan is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon with over 15 years experience in postgraduate medical teaching and training.

Specialising in reconstructive, breast and cosmetic surgery, Sultan Hassan regularly holds clinics in London, Birmingham, Cardiff, the Southwest, the Midlands and the North of England.

When it comes to performing surgery, Sultan Hassan is a perfectionist. This meticulous approach enables patients in his care to relax, safe in the knowledge that they are receiving the highest standards of care available in the UK.

Mr Hassan’s qualifications are a testament to his skills: as well as being a fully-qualified GMC registered Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive, Breast, Cosmetic & Aesthetic Surgeon, he is a member of:
