Gastric Bypass

The Gastric bypass is a proven, effective form of weight loss surgery.

It is generally recommended for patients with a higher BMI, Type 2 Diabetes or for people who nibble, graze and have a sweet tooth.

Gastric Bypass ( Roux-en-Y) Surgery creates a small stomach pouch which is connected to a loop of the small bowel (the duodenum is bypassed.)

The bypassed remaining stomach and the small bowel are reconnected downstream, which enables the digestive juices from the stomach, liver and pancreas to mix with the food and allow some of it to be absorbed.

The Gastric Bypass is restrictive and malabsorptive weight loss surgery, which means it restricts the amount of food consumed and restricts the absorption of calories.

The gastric bypass is not reversible.

Benefits of the gastric bypass:

  • Restricts the amount you can eat
  • Produces alterations in gut hormone, which improves satiety
  • Calories not fully absorbed
  • Laparoscopic surgery (key hole surgery)
  • Type 2 Diabetes symptoms usually go into remission

Long term risks of the Gastric bypass:

  • Dumping syndrome
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • The gastric pouch can stretch

Multi vitamin and mineral supplements will need to be taken daily for life.

Vitamin B12 injections will be needed every 3 months for life

Bloods will need to be taken at least annually to assess nutritional status

As with all Bariatric Surgery, losing weight and maintaining weight long term requires dietary, exercise, lifestyle and psychological change, otherwise weight can be regained.
