Gastric Band

Benefits of the gastric band:

  • Laparoscopic surgery (key hole surgery)
  • Least invasive option at surgery
  • Fully reversible if necessary
  • Restriction level adjustable
  • All vitamins and minerals absorbed
  • Short hospital stay
  • Speedy recovery

Long term risks of the gastric band:

  • Slippage
  • Erosion
  • Pouch enlargement
  • Oesophageal dilatation
  • Tubing and port problems
  • Easy to cheat by eating the wrong textures of food
  • Requires very strict adherence to the long term post operative diet
  • Gastric banding has the highest rate of re-operation of all bariatric procedures
  • Slower weight loss compared to other bariatric procedures

It is important to note that the vast majority of gastric band complications and poor weight loss are due to lack of patient compliance.

If you continue to overeat and fail to follow advice given to you regarding how to eat with the gastric band, the gastric band will be ineffective.

For these reasons, a patient education, compliance and an aftercare programme that meets your individual needs is essential.
